Read first before going to the GUIDE step by step!

This is my guide on how to achieve S-OFF on an unrooted, NAND-locked device running the latest (4.67.651.1){4.67.651.3)(5.07.651.1) Latest OTA HBOOT version (2.18) with Android Version 2.3.5.

The method involves using HTCDev.com to unlock the Bootloader of the device (which this guide will not cover, as there are procedures on the HTCDev site for that).

This guide will cover what to do after your Bootloader is "unlocked" by that process, in order to roll back your HBOOT to a non-watermarked version that can be rooted with unrevoked.

The rooting process with unrevoked will also not be covered in this thread, as it is well-documented.

Instructions with IMAGES click [HERE!!]

IMPORTANT NOTES:
  • If all you want to do is root and be able to install custom ROMs, then you do NOT NEED THIS GUIDE! HTC's unlocker will allow you to do that by installing a custom recovery. This guide is NOT for beginners. If you don't know WHY you want to be S-OFF, then you probably don't need to be. This is for advanced users, or those who are still under warranty and need to send their phone for repairs after using the HTCDev unlock process.
  • This guide assumes that you've completed the unlocking process from HTCDev.com, which means you've also downloaded fastboot/adb to a local folder on your computer. That will be the same folder from which you will be running the commands listed in this thread.
  • The Superuser file is a flashable zip, which means it must NOT be extracted after downloading! After download is complete, copy to /sdcard as-is, so that it can be flashed in recovery.
  • In order to flash recovery in fastboot, the recovery.img file from the zip file needs to be in the same folder as the fastboot.exe.
  • The flash_image binary and the mtd-eng.img can be placed on the root of the /sdcard prior to starting the S-OFF process.
  • The PC36IMG.zip should NOT be placed on the SD card until the step (10) where it is used. If you have it on the card, it will cause delays in loading fastboot on the device.

  • If the bootloader doesn't recognize the PC36IMG.zip, and you used Windows Explorer to rename the PC36IMG file, make sure you didn't add an extra ".zip" to the end of the file name. Most people hide file extensions, so that can happen without you even realizing it (especially if you see that it's already recognized as a "ZIP" file). If you still have issues after checking that, the only other reason it wouldn't work is a corrupt or faulty SD card. If you can try a different card, see if the PC36IMG file works on it.
  • If you'd prefer to root/NAND unlock using Revolutionary, you can substitute the Froyo ROM file (in Step 10) with a Gingerbread ROM file (any version up to 4.54). The latest version unlockable with Revolutionary can be found HERE!

THIS A VIDEO GUIDE OF THAT WILL HELP FURTHER IN DETAIL.

  2. Will this work for my EVO 4G 2.3.5? I want to download ICS, but your other video said I must root it fist.. I need help please.

  3. Yes, this is the guide "AFTER" you UNLOCK first. Now READ the whole first(1st) page where you download the files from Before you go to the "GUIDE", at the end you will see you DO NOT have to go all the way to v2.2(Unrevoke) but 2.3.3(Revolutionary) which is right before 2.3.5 that you have?
WHY? the revolutionary method only takes like 5mins other than this takes a little more time and many who DO NOT READ miss steps and then end up having issues.
If you want to flash ROM's, Customize settings then you have to fully ROOT your phone going through the whole guide, but "IF" you are just wanting to get FREE wifi, can achieve this with just unlocking and flashing recovery finish it with running the SU file to have free wifi tether app have permissions without having to ROOT you device.
Either way ALL methods and warranty's CAN be RESTORED..

**THIS IS PUT HERE SO THE NEXT PERSON COMING IN SEE IT AND READ IT AS WELL;)**

  6. Hi Tekn0!

I've already unlocked my phone using your method and am already in the process of rooting, again, using your method. But I seem to have forgotten how to bring up a command screen for the Android.

Could you refresh my memory on how to do this?

    1. Open CMD(dos) you have to run commands from c:/android and this should be what's shown on the screen. assuming that you created this directory on ur c: drive.

    2. Letme know how it goes or if you have any further questions :)

  7. Hey thanks for the quick response! I just tried "run" from the search option under the Win start button. Then type in CMD. A DOS window opens and states: C:\Users\asb1>

I type in c:/ANDROID. Unfortunately, in the DOS window, I get "c:/ANDROID is not an internal or external command, operable program or batch file." I do have an ANDROID file saved on the C drive, as you previously instructed from the unlock procedure.

FYI: My #1 target in following your directions is to use my EVO as a hotspot!

    Please advise.

If I could send you an email with pics of where everything stands, I think it would give you a good idea of what I did wrong. Send me an email to asandoval10@ymail.com, and I'll respond with pics that I took.

  20. I noticed that as of May 2, 2013 you were still responding to questions which I must say is very awesome of you. It's appreciated! Anyway, I am trying to root my phone however your guide is for any software version up to 5.07.651.1 and I have software version 5.07.651.6. Here are my following version numbers

    HBOOT 2.18.0001
    Android Version 2.3.5
    Software Version 5.07.651.6

The question here will this method you describe above still work with the latest Software Version 5.07.651.6 as everything else is the same except the Software Version. I've looked around and can't find a guide for 5.07.651.6.

  22. NO problem, thanks a bunch! I don't need to backup as the phone is a fresh recovery. I did that as I am handing this phone off to someone else. So I wiped it clean with all the info on it. Everything I needed was already on another device. However, I appreciate the wise backup reminder very much. :)

If you don't mind, could you let me know if I'm forgetting something I should be backing up other then personal information?!?

    1. Think that's about it, if you have already backed up won't hurt to wipe the SD card if you are not replacing it. Overtime we forget what info we had stored on there as well..
